STEPS TO PARTICIPATE AS A MUNICIPALITY, MAINTENANCE:
1-. First of all, the municipality must propose one or more potential planting areas to “El Árbol es Vida“. This can be done by filling in the form available at: http://www.elarbolesvida.com/plantaciones
2-. The technical team will analyse the proposals, and once the feasibility has been analysed, a specific proposal will be made to each municipality for each plantation. In this sense, several options are possible, taking into account the multifunctionality of the forests:
- If the plantation has a mainly productive function (poplar, biomass, short rotation species, etc.). In this case, “El Árbol es Vida” bears the costs of planting and maintenance and an agreement is reached with the municipality, which can be of two types:
- An annual rent is paid to the municipality for leasing the area. Once the felling period is over, the yield belongs to the Foundation for the sustainability of the programme itself.
- A consortium is formed between the Foundation and the Municipality for which no annual rent is paid, and at the end of the period the profits derived from the felling are divided according to the contributions of each entity.
- If the plantation has a mainly protective function (peri-urban park, restoration of a river bank, etc.), “El Árbol es Vida” bears the cost of planting and it is the Municipality that must sign a commitment to maintain the plantation.
In any case, the Diputación de Granada and the Provincial Energy Agency of Granada are at the disposal of the municipalities to advise them on the final signing of the agreements for the plantation, and in the latter case in particular to see possible ways to create activities in the municipality that can support the maintenance of the plantations without being a direct burden for them (such as experiences of voluntary compensation of CO2 emissions such as those ofhttp://www.maderasnobles.net/ or http://arboliza.es/).
