MUNICIPALITIES:
The Provincial Energy Agency of Granada (APEGR) and the Spanish Wood Foundation are preparing the signing of a collaboration agreement to give the possibility to the municipalities, companies and citizens of Granada to participate in a coordinated way in the project “EL ÁRBOL ES VIDA“.
“EL ÁRBOL ES VIDA” is an initiative, promoted by the Spanish Timber Foundation, which has been declared an Event of Exceptional Public Interest. Its main purpose is to promote the culture of trees and wood in Spanish society and it is planned to plant 10 million trees, depending on the donations obtained by the Spanish Timber Foundation for this programme. The programme will save Spain emission rights equivalent to 2.2 million tCO2 over a period of 40 years.
ADVANTAGES OF COLLABORATING WITH THE TREE IS LIFE FOR A MUNICIPALITY:
It may be in the interest of Municipalities to collaborate with the Tree Is Life Programme because plantations may be carried out on surfaces in the municipalities, and this entails a number of positive aspects:
- The areas will be replanted at the expense of the project and do not involve any expense for the Municipality, depending on the donations that are obtained and contracts will be established with the owners for the appropriate management of the replanted areas.
- If the areas are owned by the municipality, the planting of these areas will add value to them and generate income or benefits for the municipality.
- For the plantations, the generation of local employment will be sought whenever possible, also taking into account parameters of social insertion of groups at risk of exclusion.
- The plantations will be carried out with the greatest technical rigour and in a professionalised manner, for which the programme has the support of the School of Forestry of the Polytechnic University of Madrid.
- Image of the Municipality associated with the great initiative that will be developed in Spain in the coming years.
- Holding of events to promote tree culture in the municipality.
There is also the possibility that municipalities can collaborate in obtaining sponsorship from companies located in their municipal area that allow for greater planting in the municipality. In this case, the sponsoring companies also have important tax advantages!
